My Aims for Contemporary Fashion Communications

Updated: Mar 20, 2024

Aims For My New Module

I aim to learn more about film and photography as I am most interested in this part of fashion communications. I currently have socials that I’d like to improve through photos and film. I feel like it will help me with being an entrepreneur due to the fashion industry relying on social media and visuals to promote their brands and new collections. It will also help with getting my collections in magazines if my portfolio of photoshoots are interesting and fit the aesthetic of the magazines. Marketing is also something I’d like to improve and learn more of as I am unsure where to start when it comes down to it.

I am going to research semiotic analysis and how useful it is when it comes to photography and filmography. I am also going to research established photographers and directors in the fashion industry. I can use all these to help me throughout my module. I believe this module will help me gain knowledge on how important it is to communicate your brand and style through both analog and digital fashion communications. Also I believe it will help me promote better on social media with improved fashion photography and filmography.

What I learnt to do today was analysing magazines and the feelings plus thoughts behind the process of the appearance of the magazine. We looked at The Face Magazine, issue Summer of Sip 2023. The issue clearly stated through imagery that the theme was society today along with sins and sex.

My notes included about the Lourdes shoot Born Wild shot by Sharna Osborne. We talked about is it empowering or is it misogyny.

The Face Lola Summer Issue
Theme: sex, sin and music
Notes: Avant Garde, breaking gender norms, sensual, relates to music artists through photography (can hear art deco song Lana del rey), Barbie esq, informal, less advertising, more towards the girls gays and theys

But is it misogynistic?

A lot of tits and ass but no men showing off their bits and bobs.
Motorbike shoot
Men covered on the bike while she isn’t. It’s a danger to her wellbeing. Women should be sexual while men aren’t. Objectifying. She’s not driving she’s riding. Appealing to the male gaze or even the lesbian gaze.  Not promoting for the use but being suggestive. Cars flames hot women, very ken. Playing on male fantasies – mask. Seductive face no smile.  Degrading af. “I just wanted to be beautiful” Voyeurism.

Baby Shower
Male child, why not daughters. Baby pissing. White for purity but she has a baby. Wedding night, try for a bay on the wedding night. Women must have children. In the house with a child, housewife trapped. Crying baby. Not the body of a mother who has just had a baby. Not realistic.

Simple Pleasures
Men not as exposed at men. More silly than sexual. Playful for the men

Or is it empowering?

Motorbike Shoot
Women showing off with self confidence. Quotes saying no bullshit from boys. Promoting women with boys. She’s using herself to promote towards men. She claims it’s for her not for him.
Baby Shower
Mother’s can till be sexy and beautiful. White for youthful and new beginnings. Being a mother doesn’t mean no sex.

Simple Pleasures
Men are bearing skin. Sensual. Bending gender norms. Men are submissive not women. Feminine men less masculinity.

Overall, we saw that this magazine was portraying sin, the good the bad and the dirty. The photoshoots are sensual and almost like the opposite of what a women’s society is even though it is showing how society is today. “Editor Matthew Whitehouse on THE FACE's latest cover star, Lourdes "Lola" Leon, and all the sexy, sinful stories that fill the pages of our new print issue.” From the editor’s letter by Matthew Whitehouse.
